Photorealism-
Phantasy- custom design
The
Airbrush becomes more and more the magic tool of creative
people.
It was in the final years of the Seventies when my artistic
life was facing a fundamental change. After considering
a while, I decided to purchase an airbrush. In those
times it was still something very avantardistic. The
magic thing was called the super 63-A Aerograph made
by DeVilbiss together with an extremely quiet compressor.
The advantage of this tool compared to the old fashioned
airbrushes, is the extra regulation of the flow of the
paint liquid and the airpreassure. Besides it was handy
like a pen. ( The assortment of airbrushes is very numerous
- various producers like Iwata, Pascher, Hansa, Harder
and Steenbeck are partly easier to handle.)
Soon I was experiencing, the particular hard to handle
- and the moody character of this instrument. It took
me several years to get used to it.
A view hints to the technic: The airbrush is not
a magic stick!
It is not possible to create paintings on paper or on
canvas in short time, its also not a ticket into the
paradise of creativity. Never the less of modern opportunities,
like photocopy machines, photocameras and projectors,
are artistic abilities absolutely necessary.
Developed for photoretouching, nowadays airbrush is
playing an essential role in the graphic arts. This
technic is particular helpful for vehicle surface design
because on metal, with the normal brush, you see every
stroke. Colour graduations are easier to achieve with
the airbrush. Particular for work on metal and body-painting
is this technic amazingly quick.
But the airbrush is only a gadget with particular
characteristics. Before you start your job, its
necessary to have a precise planning of it! Unthourougly
simple images, a la "palms on the beach" cheaply
and unfinished appearing like you see it often by socalled
" airbrush artists" -its like "Fastfood
painting" and you shall leave this to the young
wild sprayers.
I particular use the airbrush for vehicle surface, decorations
(custom painting) and as a supporting for acrylic
painting on canvas. The difference to the custompainting
is, that I am working without selfadhesive masking perhaps
only with non sticking paper masks.
On contract I may create more
attractive appearances to motorbikes, cars, boats,
helmets, snowboards etc. Every work is unique
and particular. Images from pictures and other inspirations
you may take into the design. Vehicle surface paintings
will be executed in acrylic paints and finaliced with
a transparent protecting layer.
On canvas I mainly create surrealistic, spontaneous
works -often in the socalled "freehandtechnic".
But I also paint portraits of classical cars and
motorbikes often in connection with North American
Natives motives. Smaller format painting motives
(often portraits) I do on card- or woodboards. The cardboard
saves you in not doing prepararation works like adding
a ground layer and sandpaperpolishing. The airbrush
of course you also can use for wall paintings and with
adjusting paints also for works on glass surface. But
always in context with brushes and crayons.
In
the art gallery you see some samples of it.
